QUEENS, N.Y. – October 17, 2026 – Cold winds swept through Citi Field on Saturday night as Los Angeles FC battled New York City FC to a dramatic 1-1 draw in a crucial late-season Major League Soccer matchup.
With playoff positioning on the line, LAFC entered the contest looking to secure three valuable points on the road.
The Black & Gold broke through in first-half stoppage time after Son Heung-Min drew a foul approximately 30 yards from goal. Leo Walta stepped up and delivered a perfectly placed free kick past NYCFC goalkeeper Matt Freese, sending LAFC into halftime with a 1-0 advantage.
New York City responded with increased pressure after the break, testing LAFC goalkeeper Hugo Lloris as the home side searched for an equalizer.
In the 59th minute, Andrés Perea rose above the defense to head home a corner kick delivered by Nicolás Fernández Mercau, leveling the match at 1-1 and energizing the home crowd.
Both teams continued pressing forward as the match entered its final stages, with neither side willing to settle for a draw.
The night’s defining moment arrived deep into stoppage time when Son Heung-Min found space inside the penalty area and unleashed a right-footed strike that rattled the inside of the post before bouncing away.
What appeared destined to be a dramatic LAFC victory instead ended in frustration as the final whistle confirmed a 1-1 draw.
The result extended LAFC’s unbeaten run under interim head coach Xavi Tamarit to three matches as the club continues its push toward the postseason.
LAFC now returns home to face its crosstown rival, LA Galaxy, on October 25 at BMO Stadium.
On a bitterly cold night in Queens, LAFC came within inches of taking all three points. Instead, the woodwork delivered the final heartbreak.
