No. 5 Michigan State Overpowers USC in Big Ten Home Opener

USC Women’s Soccer faced a difficult opening test in Big Ten conference play Thursday evening, falling 5-0 to fifth-ranked Michigan State at Rawlinson Stadium.

The Spartans entered the contest among the nation’s top programs and quickly demonstrated why, combining relentless attacking pressure with clinical finishing to take control of the match.

Michigan State wasted little time making its presence felt.

Just six minutes into the opening half, Kayla Briggs found the back of the net following an assist from Kennedy Bell, giving the visitors an early advantage.

The Spartans continued applying pressure, and Bell soon emerged as the central figure in their attack.

In the 28th minute, Bell doubled Michigan State’s lead with assistance from Briggs and Bella Najera. Barely two minutes later, Bell struck again, completing a rapid scoring sequence that left USC trailing 3-0.

The three-goal halftime deficit presented a significant challenge for the Trojans, who struggled to establish sustained attacking possession against Michigan State’s organized defensive structure.

USC attempted to respond after the break, showing flashes of attacking determination despite the scoreboard.

One of the Trojans’ best opportunities came when Eleanor Morrissey struck the post, narrowly missing a chance to put USC on the board.

Michigan State, however, remained firmly in control.

Renee Watson extended the advantage in the 66th minute, finishing an opportunity created by Briggs. Shelby Vaughn added the final goal in the 87th minute, completing a commanding performance for the visitors.

The defeat dropped USC to 1-4-2 overall and 0-1-0 in conference competition, while Michigan State improved to 5-0-2.

For USC, the evening served as a reminder of the demanding competition awaiting the program throughout its Big Ten schedule.

Despite the disappointing result, the Trojans will look to use the experience as an opportunity to regroup, strengthen their defensive organization, and find greater consistency moving forward.
